Our First OB Appointment

December 22, 2009 - San Francisco, California

Jaime and I have decided to go with Dr. Meister at California Pacific Medical Center. CPMC is known as being the best birthing center in San Francisco and specializes in high risk pregnancies. I am a low risk pregnancy, but every mother wants the best for her baby.

My father is kind enough to drop me off at CPMC where Jaime is waiting for me in the reception area. We go in and the doctor goes through family history, nutrition, questions/concerns, and we have a lengthy discussion about H1N1 vaccinations and finally agree that I should be vaccinated. Also, the doctor notices that I have lost some weight and we discuss how I might be able to put those pounds back on during the second trimester.

The doctor then performs an ultrasound and we see the baby jerk in movement. The baby then turns and we see the heartbeat. Jaime leans in closer to get a better look and we are AMAZED. I almost cried. I felt so relieved to see the heartbeat. The Dr. also confirmed that the gestational age is on target at 9 weeks and that my due date would remain the same - July 27, 2010. At 9 weeks, the doctor says I have a 5% chance of miscarriage as opposed to 20% just one week earlier. I feel some sense of relief, but know that the worrier in me will continue until I hold my little girl in my arms (yes, I am convinced it is a girl!)

Telling the parents...

Thanksgiving 2009 - Daly City & Mission District, SF

Fernandez Home -
I wrap 2 baby bibs for my parents. One says "What happens at Grandma's stays at Grandma's" the other, "Monkeying around with Grandpa". I also wrap a frame that says "I love my uncle". I give my parents and my brother the gifts. My dad opens the bib and says, "Oh, I can put this on Chico when I feed him at your house". I say "No Dad, it's for our baby." My mom then yells out in excitement and hugs me. Steve was the first to get it and he smiled and hugged us in congratulations. He let my parents figure it out on their own. :)

Trejo Home -
We head over to the Trejo house for Thanksgiving dinner after stuffing ourselves at my parents house for lunch. I wrapped a bib for my mother-in-law that says I love my grandma in Spanish. She opens it, and says in Spanish thank you and that she can use it for Isabella. Jaime and I laugh and tell her it's for our baby. Carmen then jumps up and hugs us. Everyone is so happy. We hug my mother and father-in-law and sister-in-law and family. We tell them we wanted to wait until I was a little further along since I was only 6 weeks at the time.

An unexpected Christmas present

November 2009 - South San Francisco, CA
I am sick for a week. I feel like I have the flu. I go to the Doctor. She asks when my last period was. I have to think about it...yes, I say - It's a couple of days late. Weird... I agree to a blood test.

I go home. Scared to break the news to Jaime. Not because he would be upset. Just because we were planning on going on one last trip in 2010 before trying to conceive.

I tell Jaime that I needed to get a blood test and that the doctor thinks I might be pregnant. He sits silently. He takes a shower. A few minutes later, he tells me to come to the bathroom. I do. He tells me that he is excited and that he loves me - he's just nervous. I tell him I understand. We agree to wait for the results of the blood test.

The next day we're at Lowe's looking for Christmas decorations since it's our first Christmas in our first home. I get the call from the doctor confirming that I am 2-3 weeks pregnant. I look over at Jaime and just say "2-3 weeks". He turns to me and says "2-3 weeks until we find out?" and I say, "no, I'm 2-3 weeks pregnant". He then hugs me and kisses me on the forehead and says congratulations. I start crying I am so happy. Overwhelmed with joy and happiness.
